Goals
In June 2015, California Governor Jerry Brown ordered residents of California to cut water use by 25 percent due to the historic drought that hit the state. WaterGenius realized that it would take more than passing legislation to offset the problem, and they decided to create an incentive-based initiative that will encourage residents to do their part. Thus, WaterGenius and WaterGenius Challenge were born.
Overview
WaterGenius Challenge is an extension of WaterGenius application platform (Case Study). WaterGenius Challenge empowers employers to encourage their employees to signup and compete on saving water. Users would take recommended actions to accrue points that can later be redeemed for rebates on home improvement products that are aligned with saving water usage.
Use Cases
A powerful algorithm with API integrations and extensive data points enables users to register as part of a team for their company with a unique code at WaterGenius Challenge, enter their city and local water utility.
They are then taken to their personalized challenge screen where the top—”Record and Reward”—section is dedicated to recording each user’s
completed projects and actions. This section is the home for displaying gallons of water saved and points earned by the user by completing the projects and actions. The bottom—”Project Recommendation”—section is dedicated to home improvement project recommendations that are geared to savings in water and utility bills.
Record & Reward
This is the top section of the user’s personalized challenge screen which is dedicated to recording each user’s completed projects and actions as well as displaying the points accrued and gallons saved by completing the projects and actions.
1. Projects
Challenge participants are recommended take on 5 projects they can take on their house to save water. The projects include landscape upgrade, toilet upgrade, shower-head upgrade, dishwasher upgrade and clothes washer upgrade.
Each project has assigned points that users can earn by completing these projects. Unlike actions, projects are taken on only once.
2. Actions
Users can mark any of the recommended projects as complete simply by checking them off. Then, users are prompted to upload a photo evidence of before and after to prove the completion of the project.
There are five recommended home improvement projects that aim to save water. Designed with scale in mind – the campaign manager can add, delete and edit recommended projects from the back-end at any time. Each of them is a one-time home improvement project that users undertake that will be checked off only once by the user.
3. Rewards
Individual projects and actions are assigned points that users will be able to accrue by completing them. The points are then displayed on each user’s personalized challenge screen. Points have redeemable value for product purchases through rebates or discounts.
Our algorithm calculates a number of gallons that have been saved by completing a specific recommended project or action, which is then displayed on each user’s personalized challenge screen.
Project Recommendations
This is the bottom of user’s personalized challenge screen which is dedicated to home improvement project recommendations that are geared to saving water and utility bills. Each of the recommended projects has an overview, rebates, a list of relevant products, a list of home improvement professionals, a powerful personalization feature, as well as a dynamic savings amount per year.
Products
Each project leverages third-party API integrations with home improvements product retailers, such as Home Depot and Lowes, to list relevant products, images, pricing, as well as rebates and store comparison within the same space.
Professionals
Each project also leverages a third-party API to display a location-based list of home improvement professionals that can help the user with the project, including their contact information and website.
Personalization
All five projects are highly customizable based on household size, amount of project items in the house, items that need replacement, and unique user behavior of the household.
Cost Savings
Our algorithm undertakes a series of intricate calculations across data points based on location, utility rate, season, household properties and user behaviors to provide the user with the amount of savings per year if a user takes on a specific project.
Campaign Owener
The campaign admin panel is where we see the real power of the platform, with a simple and intuitive design. The WaterGenius Challenge campaign manager can log in to visualize, analyze and extend the power and scale of the challenge to any level without compromising the design functionality.
Import CSV
Import CSV enables managers to update the database with updated info about cities, rebates, utility rates, water sewer rates, county info and other data that will affect the calculation of the entire platform.
Professionals
As a redundancy for home improvement professionals, this feature enables the manager to upload a backup of professional data in the event of third-party API technical issues that are beyond the control of WaterGenius.
Products
As a redundancy for recommended product listings, this feature enables the manager to upload a backup of product data in the event of third-party API technical issues that are beyond the control of WaterGenius.
Companies
This section is where the manager will be able to track activities of the challenge, gallons of water saved by each company, points earned by each company, review user-submitted evidence photos and approve completed projects.
Projects
The scalability of the platform is well-portrayed in this section, where the manager is able to view and edit project details, as well as add and delete existing projects.
Actions
Another feature that enables the manager to scale the campaign. The manager can view and edit action details, frequency, and points. The manager can also delete an existing action.
